Sidewall router bit with replaceable carbide inserts

Hi, I want to share a little side project we have been working on to solve a problem we’ve had for many years. To finish the sidewalls of our skis, we use a custom-made router bit with fixed blades that cut at 15° with a 45° transition. The problem is that it wears out way too quickly. Considering that they charge us around €350 for a new one, we decided to change our approach.

We discovered an insert made for aluminum (APMT1604) with a convenient geometry, and we designed a router bit around it. The results are promising; the inserts can be found at a very low price (no need for high quality here, as they will get destroyed by the fibers anyway). With the start of the season, we will put it under stress to see how it holds up.

ciao tiz, sono alberto avevo comprato l’evolve!vi ho già citato qui sul forum…

Ciao Alberto.

We should refine some details before thinking about selling it. Maybe one day.

We’ve tried similar solution to yours but to obtain the 45° transition above the edges the only way was a custom router bit.

This one cost us 150€ 7 years ago, this summer the price was more than double.

We are curious about the angle you guys use, we like the way 15° looks but we have 8mm wide sidewall, for thinner ones can be to much probably.

looks apart i think 15° is the standard for sidewall cutters(round and square blade, hss bar) and doesn’t interfere with hand files during edge working
