This is super helpful to see your process. I’m trying to source some dried aspen or pawlonia here in Utah since buying cores in small numbers is so hard now.
I don’t know if its helpful but i’ve bought pawlonia from bricolegnostore is in south italy Tavole e listelli di Paulownia Piallate it’s pretty cheap… i don’t know if they ship to usa, maybe bulk quantities…i’ve bought ash this year(almost extint in usa?)
This looks super interesting. Since I can’t really buy wood cores here and will probably end up making my own, I’ll maybe try this out. Looks like the reinforcement in Elan Ripsticks with their “Tuberlite” tech. My plan was for my first set of skis to be inspired by the Ripsticks (call them the Ripoffs) so this works great if it turns out. Goal was to get decent light skis that maybe turn into touring skis and then try some heavier Titanal skis whenever that all gets back in stock.
i don’t use cad so i can’t help you in that way, for copying skis rocker and camber i’ve used a 90 degree slot mold, instead of building the classic mold with the ribs i’ve build a “tray” with slots for mdf inserts of different height (and thin spacer for fine regolation), i’ve put the ski on top oof it and add the insert filling the space under the ski, on top of it i use a double cassette to compensate the gap between to insert, double-triple check and slowly but surely i obtain a pretty similar profile of the original ski
Here’s a close-up is visible the carbon reinforcement(during planing it dull the planer blade…i have a cheap planer the replacement are pretty cheap…)the sidewall excess will be cut later
I’d love to see your clamping setup without the core in place. Looking to build a sidewall clamping station rather than just using a bunch of loose f-style clamps.
my setup is a bunch of clamp… F clamp, pipe clamp, 3d clamp, for one core at a time it works…i’m thinking of building a table to set at least the pipe clamp in place…for a more ‘industrial’ setup you cuold buy-build somthing like this
Yeah I just do a row of F-style clamps, but occasionally if the sidewalls are a little irregular it wants to lift or warp. This rack may inspire me to weld up a custom fixture.
